Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been fascinated with the Native American culture. Maybe it was Disney's Pocahontas who originally sparked this passion... But either way I believe Native Americans were the first to really understand the power of fashion. Their colors, layers and patterns are so unique they can stand alone and make a statement. This is why I decided to dedicate today's blog to them. So, party on Pocahontas! I know we will be seeing these trends for years to come.
I too share your appreciation and curiosity about First Nations culture and art. I do, however, have a problem with accrediting Pocahontas to be a representation of First Nations culture; it is a very romanticized, demeaning and sexualized portrayal.
ReplyDeleteNative "cultural" patterns and "fashion", or how the media and fashion industry has presented it to us, is very alluring and beautiful, I agree! But by calling aspects of their culture a "trend" shows how much we have been preoccupied by materialism; we are unaware that these are a misrepresentation of the people themselves, and the stereotypes that we need to be held responsible for. I encourage you to learn more about the people, not just the "stuff" that society has appropriated.
